But most things do when you are reading about it from the professionals. When reading “The Power of Habit” by Charles Duhigg I came across the idea of a keystone habit. I discovered the idea of a keystone habit. It was a struggle to meet one of the habits on my habit tracker a day. But it seemed like all the tasks were impossible. We were going into the holidays and I needed to lock these habits in before the whirlwind of the holiday season set in. I wanted to eat healthier, exercise better, and get more sleep. Last November, I realized I was having trouble keeping track of the habits I was trying to build and change.

But what about all those goals you set for yourself at the beginning of January? Getting up and dancing to your favorite song first thing every morning can be an amazing keystone habit to get your day started off on the right foot.It’s nearly spring and the buzz of the new year has faded. If your new habit is a big one like exercising, start off with a goal such as, “I will do 15 minutes of activity each day.” You can increase it as the habit becomes ingrained in your daily routine. Keep this in mind for goals like exercising. The habit must be one that you do daily, at least for the first few months. Taking on more than a single habit at a time will set yourself up for failure. Keystone Habit “Rules” Always Phrase Your Habit in the Positiveįor me, instead of saying “I’m never hitting snooze again,” I might say, “I’m waking up each morning as soon as the alarm goes off.” Tell yourself the results you want – not the results you don’t want. Then pick a small goal and start with that. If you want to be “more productive,” write down what that might look like. Start with the overriding goal and break it down into smaller pieces.įor example, if you want to be healthier, that might involve exercising daily or eating healthier.
